We are scheduled to travel for our Embassy appointment in the next week.  I can't seem to get clarification from our agency if the US Embassy in Addis will be impacted by the proposed government shutdown.  Does anyone have any information?

Thanks!

In the USCIS conference call today, Ambassador Susan Jacobs specifically addressed this and said that if there is a government shutdown, it would affect USCIS and State Dept personnel too.  A government shutdown means they are not getting paid, and she said there is a rule that they cannot work if they are not getting paid.  So yes, these employees would be affected just like the other govt employees.

That is what we are reading as well. Non-Essential services such as consular services at the embassy will be furloughed. We leave in 11 days to file our I-600 at the embassy.
Adding to our fun is that we work for the DoD and although my husband is considered essential and will continue working without pay we are not 100% sure our housing allowance will continue to be paid through a shutdown. Commisary is set to close Saturday if no compromise is reached. Base gas stations (gas here is HIGH) etc.
All around stressful!

Wow - I hope for so many reasons that this can get worked out and a shut-down does not happen.  Hoping for the best for all of you.

PLEASE keep your fingers crossed for everyone involved in the various stages of the embassy right now.  I know of 12 of us who could be majorly affected by this impending govt shutdown.  Hopefully, by Midnight tonight things will be resolved and no shutdown occurs or at least another temporary extension to give us some time to get our babies home and give them time to pass a budget!

We cancelled our embassy trip, leaving today, because of the possible govt. shut down.  Our appt. was for this Tuesday 4/12.  Our agency said it was up to us if we go but if it shut down, there would be no appts.  We would've gone if we had unlimited time to wait, but we don't.  If the govt. does not shut down, we'll hopefully be able to go exactly one week later.

I really, really do feel for those of you affected by a potential shutdown -- even if it is all resolved in the next 5 minutes, the uncertainty you've faced has got to be nervewracking.   It certainly is one of those curve balls nobody could have expected in their adoption plans.  Good luck to all.

DK,

I guess it's a moot point now, but I wanted to let you know that definitely the embassy was not going to have adoption appointments if they had shut down.  Our agency sent the note to us that the embassy sent to them so we saw for ourselves what they said.

Ugh!  So sorry for everyone frazzled by the possible shutdown.  Seems like the process stuff to worry about right now is never ending.

Mary - Especially sorry that you had to cancel your trip.  I don't think you could have done anything else but talk about so frustrating!

Hugs!

I booked our flights to bring our little girl home the day before the possibly shut down and knowing it might happen. It was a gamble to do this but thought the out come would be good. There is no shut down. I watched last night to the end. I could not go to sleep. To come this far with so many delays from Ethiopia and then from the US Embassy and then to this with a Gov. shut down. I should star in the one that flew over the coo coo's nest. Looks like we will be OK. I haven't got on a plane yet so things can change when I get on the big bird to bring our daughter home. This is what happened the last time I left for Ethiopia. We have a Embassy date interview and hope that nothing changes till we leave Friday.
